Bob Collins Debate

posted Sep 14, 2010, 7:12 AM by Jon Smith   [ updated Sep 14, 2010, 7:18 AM ]

Debate:  "Christianity vs Secularism : Which Provides a Better Moral Foundation?"

Location: Alumni Auditorium, Hill University Center, University of Alabama at Birmingham, 1400 University Blvd, Birmingham, AL

When: Monday, September 20 · 7:30pm - 9:30pm

Sponsored by: Birmingham Freethought Society

Details:
They're back! Bob Collins (former ministerial student, atheist, and author of "100 False Bible Prophecies" and "100 Bible Math Mistakes") will be squaring off against James Drake (director of UAB's Campus Crusade for Christ, Master of Divinity and ordained pastor) on Monday, September 20th at 7:30 pm in the HUC Almuni Auditorium.

These two gentlemen will be debating which philosophy (Christianity or Secularism) provides a better basis for true morality. If you missed the last debate, you won't want to miss this one if...

(1) You are a Christian who has ever questioned how people outside of the faith with no one better/wiser/more moral than themselves to guide them can act in a truly moral manner.

(2) You are a secularist who does not understand how true moral absolutes arise from a being who (according to the faith) intentionally drowned nearly the entire human race at one point in history.

(3) You are neither of the above, but would like to learn more about these two seemingly diametrically opposed philosophical views.

This event is free and open to the public (so bring your friends!!). The debate portion of this event will last for approximately one hour and will be followed by a one-hour Q&A session, in which members of the audience (that's you!) can voice opinions and pose questions to the debaters, who will each have two panelists on hand to help field questions and fill in the gaps.

Monday. September 20th. 7:30 pm. HUC Alumni Auditorium. Be there.

** Panelists for James Drake :
Professor Alan Carter, Ph.D. (Philosophy)
Professor James Slack, Ph.D. (Ethics/Morality)

**Panelists for Bob Collins :
Professor Mark Holcombe, M.A. (Philosophy)

National Day of Reason

posted Apr 30, 2010, 12:07 PM by Jon Smith

Set your calendar...
May 6, 2010 has been designated as National Day of Reason.

The purpose of the National Day of Reason is to celebrate reason—a concept all Americans can support—and to raise public awareness about the persistent threat to religious liberty posed by government intrusion into the private sphere of worship.

We don't have an offical WAFA event scheduled on that day.  However I encourage everyone to celebrate.
